Cozy Games Take More Craft Than They Get Credit For

Cozy Games Take More Craft Than They Get Credit For

July 9, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

There's a lazy assumption that low-stress games like Tiny Harbor Town or Lantern Hollow are easy to make. No twitch skill, no punishing bosses, so how hard can it be? Having played a lot of them, I'd argue the opposite.

The challenge in a cozy game is holding attention without pressure. Take away failure and timers and you have to make the moment-to-moment activity satisfying on its own. Every animation, sound, and bit of feedback has to pull weight, because there's no adrenaline to paper over dull spots.

Lantern Hollow gets this right by leaning on atmosphere. It's not asking you to win; it's asking you to notice things. Tiny Harbor Town does it through gentle rhythm, giving you just enough to fiddle with to stay engaged.

The best cozy games leave you calmer than when you started, and pulling that off deliberately is a real skill. Don't mistake calm for cheap.
